Notes

A technical modification guide detailing how to replace the ColecoVision's original 4116 DRAM chips (which require +5V, -5V, and +12V) with 5V-only 4516 or 4164 DRAM ICs. The mod eliminates the need for negative and high voltage rails to the memory, reducing heat output and load on the notoriously unreliable stock power supply — addressing three of the console's most common failure points (power supply, power switch, and overheating DRAM).

Covers:

Full disassembly procedure (case screws, front panel, RF shield removal)
Desoldering the 8 DRAM chips at U10–U17 and installing sockets
Removing filter components L2 (-5V) and L3 (+12V) to reclear those voltage lines
Pin-out differences between 4116 and 4516/4164 DRAM (pin 1: -5V → RFSH*/NC; pin 8: +12V → +5V; pin 9: +5V → NC)
Jumper wire installation from capacitor C42 to supply +5V to pin 8
Critical safety warning about not bridging +12V/+5V lines (risk of destroying the board)
Continuity/resistance testing procedure before power-up
Reassembly notes, including resoldering the RF shield ground point
