S-Video Mod

A modification giving the ColecoVision an S-video output - a better picture than composite, and considerably better than the RF the console leaves the factory with.

Why S-video is better

• Composite carries brightness and colour on one wire, and the receiver has to separate them again - which is where the smearing and the dot crawl on old machines come from.
• S-video keeps them on separate wires, so nothing has to be untangled at the other end.

Lab Rat published the modification on their own site, and it was worked through on the AtariAge hardware forum from 2007 - including how to have composite and S-video co-exist on the same console rather than choosing one.

It predates most of the kits sold today, which makes it part of how ColecoVision video modding got established.
