Notes

The Coleco's ADAM 1MB Memory Expansion with Battery Backup manufactured and distributed by The Brewing Academy is a high-capacity internal RAM upgrade. It shatters the memory boundaries of the stock 64K system to enable lightning-fast data workflows.

The Charles Mouse Architecture

Rather than engineering a new card from scratch, The Brewing Academy handles production and component assembly for the popular open-hardware layout originally designed by AtariAge community engineer Charles Mouse.

  • Self-Contained Logic: Unlike vintage 1980s multi-megabit expansions (and many modern alternatives from the ADAM News Network), this 1MB card does not require a secondary memory-addressing interface card plugged into Slot #2 to handle addressing functions beyond the standard 64K threshold. It handles all system banking routines independently.
  • The Battery Backup Option: The defining feature of this board is its integrated, optional CR2032 coin-cell battery socket. By introducing a continuous power trick, the card can retain data long after the host computer is turned completely off.

Primary Functionality & Features

The massive storage expansion completely redefines how software executes on the 8-bit Z80 architecture:

  • Non-Volatile RAM Disk: The battery-backed circuit allows you to format a permanent, ultra-high-speed Virtual RAM Disk. You can load entire operating systems, compiler pipelines, or software libraries directly into memory. They will boot instantly without needing mechanical data tapes or disks to spin up, even after a cold system power cycle.
  • Extended Software Workspaces: The extra banks provide a cavernous copy buffer for complex disk operations, massive spreadsheet workspaces in AdamCALC, and expansive document caching inside the native SmartWriter word processor.
  • Advanced Operating System Support: It functions natively with modern community storage devices (like the FujiNet ADAM or ADE Pro SD Drive) and provides massive memory fields for multitasking operating systems like T-DOS and CP/M 2.2 / 3.0.

Installation & Sourcing

  • Slot Fitment: The board is built onto a standard internal expansion card footprint designed to slide directly into Slot 3 (the dedicated internal memory slot hidden right underneath the ADAM console's top pop-off plastic hatch).
  • Where to Buy: Pre-assembled boards are sold directly via The Brewing Academy Hardware Shop starting around $75.00 to $85.00, depending on whether you choose a version with the battery retainer pre-soldered
