Notes

The Coleco ADAM MIB238 (Multi-purpose Interface Board) distributed by The Brewing Academy is an all-in-one hardware expansion card designed to fit into internal Slot #2. It serves as a modern, high-utility recreation of the legendary and nearly impossible-to-find 1980s Micro Innovations MIB3 card.

The Eric Pearson Design

The underlying architecture of the MIB238 was created and open-sourced on GitHub by community developer Eric Pearson. The board elegantly condenses what used to require multiple separate expansion cards into a single footprint that runs entirely off the ADAM console's native power lines without requiring an external brick.

Core Features & Capabilities

  • Dual RS-232 Serial Ports: Features an integrated modem port (with custom hardware interrupts for communication speeds up to 19.2k baud) alongside a dedicated terminal port for external 80-column display hardware.
  • Centronics Parallel Port: Provides a standard connection point to interface the ADAM with third-party hardware like 1980s dot-matrix printers.
  • Expansion Boot PROM Socket: Allows power users to install custom boot ROMs or alternative kernel operating systems directly on the hardware map.
  • Memory Expander Addressor: Provides the vital address routing signal out connector that high-capacity RAM expansion cards (anything over the baseline 64K threshold) depend on to function in the system layout.

Variations & Community Presence

While the card can be hand-built as a DIY project using Pearson's public files, The Brewing Academy acts as a primary commercial manufacturing avenue for pre-assembled runs.
