Notes

The ColecoVision Keypad Adapter Module is a modern controller interface produced by RetroGameBoyz LLC that allows alternative joysticks and gamepads to be used with the ColecoVision while retaining access to the console's complete numeric keypad.

Alternative Controller Interface

One of the challenges of replacing the original ColecoVision hand controller is its unusual combination of joystick, action buttons and 12-key numeric keypad. Although several Atari-style controllers can provide compatible directional and action-button functions, they lack the keypad required to start or control many ColecoVision games.

The RetroGameBoyz Keypad Module separates these functions.

A compatible joystick or gamepad connects to the module through its DB9 controller input. The module then connects directly to a controller port on the ColecoVision or CollectorVision Phoenix.

A built-in 3 × 4, 12-button keypad provides the numeric and symbol keys normally found on the original ColecoVision controller.

Controller Compatibility

The module can be used with several types of controllers, including RetroGameBoyz ColecoVision gamepads and arcade sticks as well as compatible Atari-style controllers.

Supported controllers include the Atari 2600 joystick, which can provide its standard single-button operation, and Atari 7800 controllers, which can provide two-button operation with compatible ColecoVision games.

This arrangement allows a player to select a preferred joystick or gamepad while continuing to use the complete ColecoVision keypad.

RetroGameBoyz does not recommend Sega Genesis controllers with the module because of undesirable controller behavior observed during testing.

Sammy Interface

Inside the Keypad Module is RetroGameBoyz's “Sammy” board, the same controller-interface technology used in the company's ColecoVision Arcade Stick.

The module is housed in a durable 3D-printed enclosure with rubber feet and includes an approximately two-foot controller cable.

Compatibility Note

RetroGameBoyz documents a possible issue with Defender when longer controller cables or adapters are used. Increased resistance can under some circumstances cause the game's second fire function, the Smart Bomb, to activate when the first fire button is pressed.

The manufacturer notes that this behavior is game-specific and can also occur with an original ColecoVision controller when an extension cable is used.

Historical Significance

The RetroGameBoyz Keypad Adapter Module represents a modern solution to a problem that has existed since the ColecoVision's introduction: how to use alternative Atari-style joysticks and controllers without losing access to the ColecoVision's essential keypad.

Rather than replacing the ColecoVision control system entirely, the module preserves its 12-key keypad while allowing a wider variety of controllers to provide the directional and action-button functions.

This makes the module both a modern ColecoVision controller accessory and an interface between the ColecoVision's distinctive controller architecture and more conventional DB9 joysticks and gamepads.
