Why a PROM

• Code in a PROM runs the moment the machine starts, before any drive has been asked for anything.
• That is exactly what a diagnostic wants: a machine whose drives or memory are faulty may not be able to load a diagnostic from tape or disk in the first place.

The MIB238 - a modern redesign of Micro Innovations' MIB3 - provides the socket alongside its two serial ports, parallel port and memory addressor port. Eric Pearson designed the card; this PROM is credited to him under the Telemetry Software name; Lundy Electronics supplies it.
