Notes

The expansion Coleco announced in 1983 and never shipped, built and released thirty years later - and the single most consequential piece of new ColecoVision hardware there is.

What it adds

  • 32K of RAM, against the console's own 1K. That is what makes arcade-sized games possible at all.
  • A General Instrument AY-3-8910 sound chip, the part used in arcade machines, MSX computers, the Sega SC-3000 and early Atari STs.
  • It plugs into the expansion port on the front of the console.

What it changed

  • Original cartridges still work untouched; SGM games detect the module and use it when present.
  • Over a hundred SGM-enhanced titles have appeared - Pac-Man DX, Penguin Adventure, Gradius, Time Pilot, Popeye, Lady Bug Arcade among them.
  • More than three thousand modules have sold since 2012, which revived ColecoVision homebrew publishing.

Opcode Games released it in 2013 under licence from Coleco Industries. The black and beige cases suit the ColecoVision and the ADAM respectively.
