5 1/4" 160K Single-Sided Floppy Disk Drive

The disk drive the ADAM actually got. It arrived later in the machine's life as an accessory, offering 160K a disk against the 256K of a data pack - less capacity, but reached in a moment rather than by winding tape to the right place.

How it connects

• By six-wire telephone cable to an ADAMnet port, the same bus the keyboard and the tape drives use.
• A second drive daisy-chains from the first rather than needing a port of its own.

What is inside

• Model 7817, single-sided, eight sectors to a track, two 512-byte sectors to a block.
• Single-sided was a cost decision by Coleco rather than a technical one, which is also why the format is 160K.

A double-sided 360K version was prototyped and is catalogued separately.
