Notes

A replacement EPROM for the ADAM's 160K single-sided 5.25-inch disk drive - the drive's own firmware, changed rather than the mechanism.

Why firmware

  • ADAM peripherals are not dumb. Each one hangs off ADAMnet with a processor of its own, taking commands over a shared serial bus, which is why the keyboard and drives are addressed rather than wired.
  • So what the drive can do - formats, capacities, behaviour - is decided by the code in that EPROM.

Updating it is how a drive gains capability without new hardware, and how it is made to work with the conversions catalogued alongside this entry.
