What was attempted

  • Micro Innovations set out to bring the price of an ADAM hard disk down far enough for ordinary owners.
  • To do it they bought used hard drives in quantity. Very few of them turned out to work.

What followed

  • The losses were significant, and the company shelved an ADAMnet hard drive project it had been working on.

So this entry marks the point where the ADAM's hardware economy ran out of room - a small company supporting an abandoned machine, undone by the cost of the parts rather than by the engineering.

As an IDE drive it is the more usable of the PowerMATEs today: IDE puts the controller on the drive, so a CompactFlash card can stand in for the mechanism.
