What it did

  • Turned text into audible speech using a dedicated chip, at a time when no home computer had the processing power to do it in software.
  • They were sold across the era's machines - the TI-99/4A's is the famous one - for accessibility, for education and for novelty, in roughly that order of seriousness.

Speech synthesisers are listed among the hardware Orphanware added to the ADAM, alongside their memory expanders, drives and interface cards. Lundy Electronics sells a modern ADAM speech synthesiser today, so the idea has outlived the company.
