Why one was wanted

  • A daisy wheel prints by hammering a formed character through a ribbon onto the platen, once per character. It is loud in a way no dot matrix printer of the period matched.
  • Acoustic enclosures were a standard office accessory for exactly this reason - and the ADAM's printer could not simply be switched off between jobs, since it carries the system's power supply.
