The 200-watt version of S.M. Video's external ADAM power supply.

What it frees

  • The ADAM's own power supply is inside its daisy wheel printer, so the printer must be connected and working for the computer to run.
  • An external supply removes that dependency entirely.

Why the size

  • An unexpanded ADAM needs a fraction of this. Supplies at 150, 200 and 285 watts - all three catalogued here - are sized for a machine carrying hard disks, memory expanders, drives and interface cards.
  • Hard disks of the period were the heavy load: a spinning MFM drive drew far more than any card.
