What formatting involves

  • A blank data pack is unusable until it is laid out - 128 one-kilobyte blocks on each of two tracks, and a directory if the pack is to be used in the HE format the ADAM treats like a disk.
  • Doing that on tape running at 20 inches per second is exacting work, which is why dedicated hardware existed for it.

Why one drive

  • With one drive, formatting is all that can be done. Copying pack to pack needs two, which is what the two-drive version catalogued alongside this is for.
