Trisyd's data pack formatter for a machine with two drives - which is the version that can copy as well as format.

Why two drives

  • With one drive, a copy means reading a pack into memory, swapping tapes and writing it out - and an ADAM's memory is smaller than a 256K pack unless it has been expanded.
  • With two, the copy runs pack to pack directly. For a user group duplicating software, that is the difference between practical and not.

What formatting involves

  • Laying out 128 one-kilobyte blocks on each of two tracks, with a directory if the pack is to carry one - on tape moving at 20 inches per second.
