Why it is needed

  • The ADAM has no real-time clock. Nothing in EOS looks for one, so every file it writes is undated unless the date is typed in by hand at each start.
  • For anyone using an ADAM as a working computer - which is what hard disks, 80-column cards and CP/M were all for - file dates are what separate a filing system from a heap.

What firmware does

  • Tell the machine a clock is present and how to read it, since its own software has no notion of either.
