Exp. Mod. #xx: CED Module

A ColecoVision expansion that would have married the console to RCA's CED videodisc player - games and films from the same machine, years before anything similar reached a living room.

The plan

• A Coleco module plugging into the front of the console, and an RCA player connected to that module and to the television.
• The player was RCA's interactive SJT400, talking to the ColecoVision through the control port.
• Ralph Baer, who had built the first home games console, worked on the prototype.
• A complete set-up was expected to cost somewhere around $395 to $495.

Why it died

• RCA stopped making CED players almost as soon as Coleco started work, having lost around $600 million on the format.
• With no player to sell it against, Coleco cancelled the module.
