Notes

A cassette player that plays audio in step with a game: speech, music and effects cued by the software rather than generated by the console. Coleco built it in 1983 for the Atari 2600, where it plugs into the second controller port.

On the Atari 2600

  • Two games used it. Smurfs Save The Day came with the module; Berenstain Bears was sold separately.
  • Each title shipped with three tapes, with one further tape working across both.
  • Out of the games it is an ordinary portable cassette recorder.

On ColecoVision

  • Coleco promoted an adapter that connected the Voice Module to a ColecoVision or ADAM through the expansion port, turning it into what the company's copy called a talking educational system.
  • That adapter is catalogued here separately as a prototype. Whether it was ever sold is the question this entry sits next to.

What makes the module interesting is the position it put Coleco in: a year after launching the ColecoVision, it built an accessory for its main competitor.
