Why Smurf specifically

  • Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle was one of the ColecoVision's launch-period titles and among Coleco's own licensed properties - the company held the Smurf licence and used it across toys as well as games.
  • So a Smurf-themed controller is closer to the console's own history than most themed rebuilds.

What a rebuild is

  • An original Coleco controller refurbished - housings and cord cleaned, worn parts renewed - rather than a new controller. The keypad and connector stay period parts, so nothing a game needs is lost.

Yurkie has refurbished roughly 750 controllers through the AtariAge forums with the aim of keeping them out of landfill; the themed ones are the visible end of that work.
