• A ColecoVision game takes movement from the stick and options from the twelve-key keypad on the hand controller.
• Replacing the controller with a better stick therefore removes half of what the game needs - unless the original stays connected alongside, which is what an adapter like this is for.

Every maker in this catalogue met the same difficulty and answered it differently: Champ built the keypad into their adapter, Newport Controls sold a splitter with their ProStick, Grips03 wired keypads into modern pads, and Lundy publishes a DB9 splitter design. Questar sold this.
