The ColUSB Power Supply Adapter is a modern replacement power solution designed specifically for the original ColecoVision video game system.
The original ColecoVision uses an unusually large external power supply with a proprietary four-pin connector and multiple voltage outputs. As original power supplies age and become increasingly difficult to replace, the ColUSB provides a modern alternative that allows the console to be powered from a compact USB power source.
The ColUSB plugs directly into the original power connector on the rear of the ColecoVision. A modern USB power source is then connected to the adapter.
Unlike a simple plug converter, the ColUSB contains the electronics necessary to provide the power required by the ColecoVision from the USB power source.
No modification to the ColecoVision is required. The adapter can be removed at any time and the console returned to use with its original power supply.
The original ColecoVision power supply is unusually large and can occupy considerable space around an electrical outlet or power strip. The ColUSB replaces this bulky transformer with a very small interface and modern external USB power source.
It also provides an alternative for ColecoVision systems whose original power supplies have failed, allowing the original console to remain in service without modification.
A USB power source capable of supplying at least 2 amps is recommended.
The ColUSB represents a modern solution to one of the more distinctive hardware characteristics of the original ColecoVision.
Unlike many contemporary video game systems that used relatively simple external power adapters, the ColecoVision requires multiple supply voltages delivered through its proprietary four-pin power connection. This makes replacing a failed original ColecoVision supply less straightforward than substituting a generic AC adapter.
By generating the necessary power from a modern USB source while retaining the ColecoVision's original power connection, the ColUSB allows original, unmodified ColecoVision hardware to continue operating with contemporary power equipment.
The ColUSB was commercially available by 2022, when Stone Age Gamer demonstrated the adapter as a compact replacement for the original ColecoVision power supply.
