The Ultimate PC Interface for Classic Consoles is a modern USB controller interface designed to connect original video game controllers and specialized peripherals to a personal computer.
Of particular importance to ColecoVision collectors, the interface was originally developed in part to provide PC support for the ColecoVision's distinctive controllers and expansion peripherals. Unlike basic USB joystick adapters, it supports the specialized functions found in original ColecoVision hardware.
The interface supports original ColecoVision hand controllers, including their directional controls, action buttons and numeric keypad. It also provides support for several of the system's more unusual controllers and peripherals, including the Super Action Controller, Steering Wheel and Roller Controller.
Spinner functionality used by the Super Action Controller, Steering Wheel and Roller Controller can be translated into mouse and joystick input for use with compatible ColecoVision emulators.
The interface also supports controllers supplied with the 2014 ColecoVision Flashback.
Two controller connections allow different supported controller types to be connected simultaneously.
The Ultimate PC Interface connects to a computer through USB and presents controller input to the operating system as a USB HID device. It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux systems that provide native USB HID support.
ColecoVision emulator support includes CoolCV, AdamEm and MESS, with support varying according to the controller and emulator being used.
The device therefore provides a modern means of experiencing emulated ColecoVision software using authentic original hardware rather than substituting a modern gamepad or computer keyboard.
The ColecoVision used controllers that were considerably more sophisticated than the simple digital joysticks employed by many contemporary systems. In addition to its standard controller's numeric keypad and two action buttons, Coleco produced specialized analog and spinner-based peripherals that can be difficult to reproduce accurately with conventional modern USB controllers.
The Ultimate PC Interface preserves the ability to use this original hardware with contemporary computers and emulators, making it a bridge between original ColecoVision equipment and modern preservation and emulation.
