The ColecoVision Control Pad is a modern replacement controller manufactured by RetroGameBoyz LLC specifically for the original ColecoVision video game system.
Designed as a more conventional gamepad alternative to the original ColecoVision hand controller, it replaces the original joystick with a directional pad and provides dedicated action, Start and Select buttons in a compact handheld design.
The Control Pad provides two primary action buttons:
Pressing both action buttons simultaneously can provide a third action in games that support the configuration.
Because many ColecoVision games require a keypad selection before play can begin, RetroGameBoyz also incorporated two commonly used keypad functions directly into the controller.
The Start button is mapped to ColecoVision keypad key 1, while the Select button is mapped to keypad key *.
This allows many ColecoVision games to be started and played entirely from the Control Pad without requiring the original ColecoVision controller.
The Control Pad does not reproduce the complete 12-key keypad of the original ColecoVision controller.
Games requiring additional keypad selections, keypad overlays or specialized controller functions may therefore require an original ColecoVision controller or a separate keypad interface.
Games designed specifically for the Super Action Controller may also require controls that are not available through this gamepad.
RetroGameBoyz offers a separate ColecoVision Keypad Adapter Module that can provide the complete 12-key keypad when alternative controllers are used.
In addition to the original ColecoVision, the Control Pad has been user-verified for use with the CollectorVision Phoenix.
It can also operate with the Atari 2600 and other Atari-compatible systems and computers when playing games requiring a conventional joystick and single fire button.
It is not compatible with the ColecoVision Flashback.
The RetroGameBoyz ColecoVision Control Pad represents a modern approach to one of the ColecoVision's most frequently debated pieces of original hardware: its hand controller.
Rather than reproducing the original joystick-and-keypad design, RetroGameBoyz created a conventional gamepad-style controller while retaining enough ColecoVision-specific functionality to start and play many original games without a separate keypad.
For games requiring the full ColecoVision keypad, the controller can be complemented by a separate keypad solution, providing players with modern ergonomics while retaining access to the ColecoVision's original control functions.
