The Coleco ADAM PicoPSU Internal Mod by open-source developer aotta (Andrea Ottaviani) is a clever, community-engineered hardware project designed to safely replace the massive factory printer power brick with an elegant, modern internal switching power supply.

The Purpose of the Mod:

By default, the Coleco ADAM was engineered without an internal power converter. Instead, it pulled all of its electrical power from the system's massive, mandatory SmartWriter Daisy Wheel Printer.

If you wanted to take your ADAM console to a friend's house just to play a ColecoVision cartridge, you were forced to drag the entire heavy printer along with you. By utilizing a high-efficiency miniature ATX power adapter (commonly called a PicoPSU or mini switching regulator block), aotta's project allows hardware modders to build a custom internal regulator circuit that fits completely inside the main ADAM console chassis.

Hardware Architecture & Benefits

  • Printer-Free Operation: It permanently frees the ADAM from its dependency on the SmartWriter printer. The console becomes a truly independent, standalone desktop unit.
  • Perfect Power Regulation: The original console motherboard strictly demands three distinct voltage rails to function properly: +5VDC, +12VDC, and -5VDC. The custom PicoPSU framework takes a single, standard external laptop power brick (usually 12V) and beautifully down-steps it to cleanly deliver all three required voltage lines.
  • Reduced Heat & Failure: Vintage Coleco transformers are notorious for running hot and drying out original motherboard capacitors. Replacing them with modern switching components drastically lowers internal operating temperatures and eliminates the "printer hum" sound distortion feedback on boot-up.
  • Safer Alternative: It provides a clean, well-routed internal board alternative to dangerous, uninsulated "arcade power supply wire-ups" that leave exposed high-voltage AC terminals rattling loosely inside vintage plastic console shells.
