How to identify it White border around a black field, the arcade cabinet photographed at an angle, PLAYS LIKE THE REAL ARCADE GAME set beside it, and a yellow starburst reading HIGH RESOLUTION VIDEO CARTRIDGE FOR COLECOVISION in the lower left.

These are the boxes the ColecoVision launched in. Coleco sold the machine on one promise - that the cartridge in the box played like the machine in the arcade - and the packaging makes the argument literally: the cabinet itself is photographed on the front, and the line PLAYS LIKE THE REAL ARCADE GAME sits next to it in white capitals.

The layout is fixed. A white border frames a black field; the licensor’s logo sits under the title; the yellow starburst badge in the lower left carries the ColecoVision wordmark, and the red COLECO block sits in the lower right. Only the artwork changes from title to title, which is what makes the line so recognisable on a shelf and so easy to date.

About this list

These records come from the museum’s ColecoVision catalogue, so this page grows as the catalogue does. Box scans, release years and rarity are the catalogue’s; the classification on each card is either the box variant recorded against that title or, where none is recorded, an attribution taken from how the release is filed.

Box classification is a collectors’ convention rather than anything Coleco or CBS ever printed on a box, and reasonable references disagree at the edges. If you own something listed here that does not match what you see, or a box that is not listed at all, please get in touch — a photograph of the front is worth more than any description.
