Description

elcome to Target Town. In 1978 Coleco put a Western street on the living-room floor: a cardboard town with an electric rifle, whose doors and windows flipped open to show outlaws. Target Town brings that street to the ColecoVision.

The street is 768 pixels long, under a sunset sky and a line of mountains. It runs from the Sheriff's Office and the Jail past the Blacksmith, the Saloon and the Target Town hotel to the Rail Road Office and Boots & Shoes Inc. It scrolls along and stops five times a round. At each stop, five targets appear one at a time, and never more than two at once. A door swings open, a window lights up, or a head pops over a rooftop or out of the alley.

Aim the ring with the joystick and press the button to fire. An outlaw faces you, then draws. Hit him first for 500 points. If you're too slow, he fires, and that's a miss. Sometimes the figure in the doorway is the lady from down the street: she raises her hands, and shooting her is a miss too. Missing thin air costs nothing. Ten misses and the outlaws take the town. Every second round the outlaws draw faster: at first they give you a full second, later only 0.6 of one.

The town has 17 openings, and every room behind them is either lamplit or dark. In a dark room an outlaw is only a grey shape. Tall doors show a full figure, windows show him from the waist up, short windows show his head and shoulders, and the rooftops show only a head.

With a Lundy speech module the town talks. The announcer welcomes you and gives each round's verdict. The Sheriff warns "He's drawing!" and "Watch who you're shooting!", and the townsfolk call out a bank robber, a jailbreak and trouble at the saloon. The lady has a word for you too. Only what matters is said, and nothing is said late. Switch the voice on or off on the title screen with LEFT and RIGHT.

Leave the title alone for 30 seconds and the town plays itself. Press * to pause during a game. At game over, press the button to play again, or # to return to the title. Target Town also has experimental support for Coleco's Roller Controller: the ball aims the ring, the keypad's 1, 2 and 3 set its sensitivity, and 4 and 5 flip its directions.
